Grinnell College, Humanities and Social Studies Complex

A core principle of Grinnell and its staff is to continue to drive academic achievement forward in all facets. Humanities and social studies spare no exception. In creating the new structure –  the goal of the design was to produce something that drives their principle forward while providing efficient business operations in a manner consistent with the College’s comprehensive campus plan.

Renovation and expansion of two existing academic buildings was completed to create a new and unified humanities and social studies complex including classrooms, offices, and academic support facilities. The building also created highly functional and flexible areas of use, maintaining the aesthetics of the surrounding area, fully utilizing the available space, and promoting sustainable architecture.

Included in the project scope was a full renovation of the existing Alumni Recitation Hall and Carnegie Hall buildings. The project was done in multiple phases, planned and executed in a sequence that facilitates continuous, relatively normal, safe operation of Grinnell College with minimal disruption to existing programs.
