The new Cambria Recreation Center at True Friends Camp Courage near Maple Lake is officially open, marking an exciting milestone for a campus dedicated to creating meaningful experiences for people of all abilities.
True Friends had outgrown the function and size of its previous recreation center and set out to create a new space with accessibility at the forefront. With the support of generous donors helping make that vision possible, McGough partnered with True Friends early in the process to develop a comprehensive budget for the new pool, gymnasium, and welcome center, helping align the project goals with financial expectations from the start.
The project transformed the outdated recreational facility with modern and accessible spaces designed to support recreation, wellness, and year-round use. The redevelopment included demolition of the existing pool, gymnasium and welcome center, followed by construction of a new facility that better reflects the needs of campers, visitors, staff, and the broader True Friends community.
The nearly 26,000-square-foot facility includes an indoor pool with space for swim-in movies and a splash pad, as well as a gymnasium designed to accommodate two concurrent power soccer games. Additional features include a raised viewing platform for spectators, a 500-square-foot stage, and a climbing wall. The gymnasium also serves as a safe space during storms and was designed as an area of best refuge.
During the grand opening celebration, speakers reflected on the heart of the project: accessibility, safety, flexibility, confidence, and joy. The event was a powerful reminder that construction has the ability to create lasting impact far beyond the jobsite.
McGough is grateful to True Friends, our project partners, community supporters and the entire project team for their dedication to this meaningful work. We are especially proud of the McGough team members who supported the project both on the jobsite and through volunteer efforts before the project even became a reality.
We can’t wait for campers to enjoy this incredible new building and all the experiences it will make possible.
