Adapting Space to Suit Modern Cancer Care Needs
As health trends and medical best practices evolve, the spaces where care is provided need to evolve as well. The infusion clinic within the M Health Fairview Clinics and Surgery Center in Minneapolis, built by McGough and completed in 2016, was less than a decade old, but changing healthcare delivery needs could only be met by a renovated space.
Increased patient volumes meant more treatment bays were needed, as was more private consultation space. The addition of three new blood draw rooms and a satellite blood bank would help increase efficiency, so the clinic didn’t need to rely on an off-site satellite blood bank. Improvements to the cooling system in the pharmacy were also needed due to increased building capacity. To accomplish this, McGough repurposed and reconfigured waiting areas, consultation rooms, and staff spaces.
While small in square footage, the updates to the space were significant, required specialized skills, and carried the extra complexity of occurring within an active cancer clinic where patients were still receiving infusion treatments.
Key elements of the 5,156 SF renovation include:
- Added 13 semi-private infusion treatment bays
- Added 3 blood draw rooms and a blood bank
- Added doors to existing open consult rooms
- Updated pharmacy cooling project, including installation of an 800lb ceiling coil above the existing ceiling
- Five phases including multiple sub-phases involving several distinct areas in the clinic
As a construction project in an active health care setting, how the work was done is just as important as what was done. The expectations met by McGough were:
- Maintain current patient volumes during construction.
- Minimal disruption to the patient experience during construction, including the imaging department on the floor below the cancer center.
- Abide by healthcare construction protocols for infection control, safety, security, noise, and vibrations.
- Excellent communication when building showdowns needed to occur.
With abundant resources and relevant expertise, including insights that came from being the contractor during the original construction of the building, McGough was able to complete the first phase of the project in just 12 weeks. Thanks to these renovations and the care taken by McGough and our subcontractors, the clinic is now equipped to provide more life-saving and life-enhancing care than ever before.
