Congratulations to Butler Square on being one of just six buildings to receive the 2017 Building Energy Challenge Award from the city of Minneapolis. Despite being over 111 years old, Butler Square has the lowest energy usage of any building in the challenge. The Building Energy Challenge Award is given to large commercial buildings in the city of Minneapolis that drive to better their buildings’ energy through renewable energy actions and energy efficiency. The program’s goal is for large commercial buildings to reduce their greenhouse gases by 15% by 2020 from a 2014 baseline.
In 2009, McGough renovated the nine-story warehouse-type building into a 13-story retail and office building and assisted Butler Square in becoming the first century-old, multi-tenant commercial building in the nation to achieve LEED-EB O&M certification (Existing Building Operations & Maintenance). In addition to LEED-EB O&M, in 2015, McGough assisted Butler Square in achieving LEED Silver certification a remarkable achievement for a building that is over 111 years old and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. McGough Facility Management team currently manages Butler Square and continuously strives to improve its energy efficiency every day.
