LEAN CONSTRUCTION

Continuous Improvement in All We Do

We believe that Lean and Operational Excellence methodologies hold the key to addressing longstanding productivity challenges in the construction industry. We are on a journey towards enterprise-wide Operational Excellence at McGough, all with the aim of maximizing value for our customers and creating sustainable results.

Our Operational Vision

  • Lead the Way with Safety
  • Zero Defects
  • 100% Value-Added Activity
  • Delivery on Demand
  • Respect for People

Transforming Construction with Lean

We embrace the Operational Excellence methodology, holistically transforming our culture and organization with continuous improvement and respect for people. Part of Operational Excellence includes lean systems and tools, such as: prefabrication, modular construction, the Last Planner System® (LPS), Big Rooms, Target Value Design (TVD), just-in-time delivery, and more. Other practices are an idea system through our Innovation Initiative, A3 problem-solving efforts, Employee Value Proposition, and strategy deployment/business planning process.

We believe that lean and operational excellence are bigger than just what we do, but who we are. McGough also founded the original Upper Midwest Chapter of the national Lean Construction Institute (LCI) and continues to participate in many activities.

Tangible Benefits of Lean

Through our Lean efforts, we consistently deliver significant cost and time savings, improved quality, and innovative solutions to challenges.

  • Standard Work: Ensuring that our operations teams and departments have a baseline in which to expect how work is performed, giving us an easy way to provide consistency and quality no matter where the work is done.
  • Cross-functional Problem Solving: When there is a complex problem, we do not shy away from problem-solving with key stakeholders through PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) or A3 Thinking
  • Advanced Construction Planning: During design and pre-construction, our teams collaborate with owners, design partners, and our internal Centers of Excellence to set up our projects for success and eliminate surprises.  This reduces value engineering needs and aligns scope, schedule, and budget earlier in preconstruction.
  • Instantaneous Estimating: Accelerating preconstruction and reducing rework.
  • 3P’s and Mock-ups: We provide expertise in designing efficiency into buildings to explicitly fit the occupants’ needs with layout, usage of space, and flow of their work. We also use 3P methodology to ensure our execution plan fits the design, site, and schedule.
