Building for the Next Generation
At McGough, we take great pride in our track record of excellence in safety management. Nothing is more important to us than the safety of our people, partners and the communities we build for. We developed our own comprehensive workplace safety program that exceeds OSHA requirements. A Workplace Accident and Injury Reduction (AWAIR) is a compliance-based program that, together with McGough’s complementary behavior-based safety program, drives our safety culture with daily education, evaluation, training and reinforcement. We require sitewide accountability and total involvement by all personnel and subcontractors, and we apply dedicated safety management and planning resources and processes to every project.
Our full-time safety team administers our AWAIR program on every project and incorporates the most stringent OSHA regulations. Activities associated with this program include weekly or biweekly site audits and safety meetings, site orientations on large projects, incorporation of specific safety requirements of the owner, and participation in OSHA’s consultation program in which OSHA representatives make scheduled visits to help identify risks and minimize hazards. In addition, regularly scheduled superintendents’ meetings include discussion of both general and specific safety concerns. Our insurance carrier and broker may also inspect job sites at random.
Safety culture is instilled through positive reinforcement, a discipline policy and accountability. For project leadership, pre-planning support and proven processes and tools help improve communication, performance monitoring and the feedback loop. For team members, we build safety awareness and vesting through ongoing training, empowerment and ownership of responsibility, pretask planning, and proactive and responsive hazard review. We evaluate the success of our behavioral-based safety program through annual perception surveys and internal performance tracking tools, and we regularly refine it to produce optimal outcomes.
The success of our programs is reflected in our accolades and high customer, employee and partner satisfaction rates. We consistently outperform the national average Experience Modification Rate (EMR), and we are the only recipient of the Minnesota Safety Council Governor’s Workplace Safety Award – the state’s highest workplace safety award – to have received it for 10 consecutive years.
Our eight Centers of Excellence serve as valuable in-house resources for any project. The focused expertise and experience-driven knowledge of our dedicated specialists lead to more efficient and impressive project outcomes.
