Building for the Next Generation
With the Minnesota State Fair right around the corner, most Minnesotans are getting excited for fried food on a stick. But here at McGough, we have a little something more to be excited about. (Don’t get us wrong though, we are still excited for the fried food on a stick.) The West End Market at the Minnesota State Fair, a recent McGough project, is being honored as one of Finance & Commerce’s Top Projects of 2014!
The new West End Market replaces the former Heritage Square and includes an amphitheater, multiple restaurants, a museum, vendor pavilions, landscape areas and plazas. It was a privilege to work on such an iconic landscape – one that will no doubt bring happiness, great food and good times for many generations to come.
While you are checking out the new West End Market be sure to take notice to a little piece of history that is right under your nose – or should we say above it. The lost “State Fair” arch was found during the construction of the West End Market and has been restored to its original glory. The original arch was the streetcar entrance from 1933 to 1964, and was taken down in the 1980’s and forgotten about until now. McGough crew members transported the lost arch, poured the new columns, and installed precast and brick for the restored “State Fair” sign. This arch can now be seen at the West End gate entrance.
We hope you’ll stop by the Fair this year and check it out!
