The Last Beam in Place for New Surly Brewing Co. Facility

The final steel beam was signed by all workers on the project.

A day to celebrate! On Friday June 6th, the McGough Surly team and our project partners celebrated the placement of the last steel beam on the new Surly Co. Brewery.  All workers who have played a role in the project attended the topping off ceremony, along with key representatives from Surly Co., as well as other project partners. The ceremony concluded by everyone raising a glass. Cheers, Surly!

The approximately 50,000 square foot destination brewery is scheduled to begin brewing beer in October 2014.

What is a topping off ceremony?

In our industry, a topping off ceremony is traditionally held when the last beam (or its equivalent) is placed atop a structure during its erection.  The practice has been traced to the ancient Scandinavian religious rite of placing a tree atop a new building to appease the tree-dwelling spirits displaced in its construction.
