Announced last week, McGough was named a 2022 Distinguished Building Award Recipient by the TEXO Construction Association for its excellence in building the Gene and Jerry Jones Family American Cancer Society – Hope Lodge. The 55,000 SF building is located at 210 N Hall Street in the heart of Dallas’ Deep Ellum Community. Construction began in late 2019 and was completed on time, opening in April 2021. The facility includes 50 guest suites, a communal style kitchen, dining room, gym, library, meditation room, and game room. In winning the award, McGough is recognized for its excellence in the General Contractor – Health Care 2 ($10 – $30M) category.
The annual awards from TEXO, evaluate various project sizes and sectors, reviewing each project uniquely, based on four criteria including: 1) Difficulty in design, location and materials, 2) Unusual construction techniques used, 3) Final appearance and quality of finished product and 4) Timeliness of completion.
The McGough team overcame unique challenges on the project, including completing additional prep work and site clean up to ensure building integrity in the project site. The largest of those challenges included extensive excavation of previous buildings below the foundation as well as the removal of metal deposited from a foundry that previously occupied the site.

Knowing the structural needs of this build plan inside and out were instrumental in us navigating challenges during the preconstruction phase on this project. Our team did a fantastic job, ensuring the structural viability of the Hope Lodge every step of the way,” said Roman Buckner, General Manager for McGough Dallas.
“I’m particularly proud of the way the team handled this project. Because of the structural systems and unique exterior envelope finishes being incorporated into this building, detailed waterproofing was important to create a safe, water and air tight building envelope. To do that, we leveraged a 3rd party consultant, as well as McGough’s Quality Control team, to ensure that all details of the building systems were properly designed and implemented. This required extensive documentation, reporting and coordination meetings with the entire team to ensure a safe environment for those guests with compromised immune systems who would utilize the facility.”
In addition to extensive site preparation on Hope Lodge, McGough was also tasked with maintaining exceptional build quality to attain both WELL and Dallas Green Building certifications, which required additional lead time to acquire proper building materials, evidentiary documentation and product data necessary to achieve the exemplary certifications in wellness and sustainability.
With the building completed, its beauty in architecture and design is second-to-none, but it also stands to serve one of life’s highest purposes – providing cancer patients and their families a “home away from home” during what certainly is one of life’s most difficult challenges.
