Cummins Power Generators, Acoustic Test Facility

Cummins, the leader in energy and machine production, was looking to create a state-of-the-art building that enabled them to test sound generation from engines during research and development. The project needed also to be seamlessly integrated into their currently operating manufacturing plant in Fridley, MN.

McGough worked hard with both Cummins and their partners to deliver what is now a first-of-its-kind facility. One includes a 23,000 SF operation with a Hemi-Anechoic test chamber for certifying and measuring engines from 1kW to 3,300kW. The project also included deft handling of utility tie-ins while maintaining uptime for the rest of the facility. The site also included removal of contaminated materials and the introduction of barrel-roof trusses that required unique mechanical requirements to eliminate air movement noise.

The project was the first of its kind in the U.S. and only the second in the world for Industrial Acoustics.
