Cowles Center for Dance and the Performing Arts

Centered around the original Shubert Theatre, built in 1910, this project involved restoring the historical theater and constructing additions and connections to create a flagship for dance in Minnesota. The project consisted of a 20,575 SF restoration/renovation and 17,495 SF addition that included renovations to the 1888 Masonic Temple, the complete renovation of the Goodale theater, and a new contemporary addition that joins the two historic buildings together to form the Cowles Center for Dance and the Performing Arts.

The Center includes office and rehearsal space for 20 nonprofit arts organizations, a 508-seat theater, and a new studio/rehearsal space that serves as the home of statewide program for web-based interactive state-of-the-art Target Education Studio; and the new U.S. Bank Atrium.

McGough lent its well-known expertise in managing and executing large-scale historical renovations in the arts and theater sector. Overseeing dozens of similar projects, we were able to deftly oversee the scope for this building that was more than 100 years old at the time.
