Through a joint partnership with Ramsey County and the City of St. Paul, Wold was hired to renovate the Griffin Building to house the St. Paul Police Headquarters. The new headquarters’ site is located next to the Ramsey County Law Enforcement Center (LEC) on land owned by County. While remaining close to the downtown core, this site allows the St. Paul Police to better serve the more active East Side. Wold worked closely with McGough throughout the design-build process to meet the project’s program and fast-paced schedule. The Griffin Building (formerly known as the Benz Building) was built in 1920 as a warehouse facility. Originally home to a confectioner company then a distillery, the building most recently housed laboratory space for 3M Companies. The design team was confronted with a structural system that offered the challenges associated with an existing structure. However the building’s layout leant itself to the open office functions that are predominant throughout. The exterior brick was tuck pointed and repaired, new windows were installed to fit the original openings and two additions were made. The building was also equipped with new mechanical and electrical/data systems, as well as new finishes.
